Visa & Entry Requirements
The information on this page is provided for general guidance only and may not be up to date. Visa rules change frequently. Always verify the current requirements with the nearest Malagasy embassy or consulate, or check the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Madagascar before travelling. Madagascar generally requires a visa for entry. Many travellers can obtain a visa on arrival at the airport, but eligibility, fees and conditions can change at any time. We strongly recommend checking the current rules with official sources before your trip.
Visa on Arrival (general information)
Madagascar has historically offered a visa-on-arrival service at its international airports (Ivato/TNR and Fascene/NOS) for many nationalities. The general procedure typically involves:
- Filling in an entry form (often distributed on the plane)
- Presenting a valid passport (check validity requirements with your embassy)
- Showing proof of return or onward ticket
- Paying the visa fee in cash
Fees have historically been in the range of 35–60 EUR depending on the duration of stay (30, 60 or 90 days). These amounts can change without notice. Always carry cash in EUR or USD as a precaution — card payment is generally not available at the visa counter.
Not all nationalities are eligible for visa on arrival. Some may need to apply at a Malagasy embassy in advance. Contact the nearest Malagasy diplomatic mission or check with your airline before departure.
Duration of Stay
The duration of stay depends on the type of visa obtained and the fee paid. Historically, options of 30, 60 or 90 days have been available. You must leave Madagascar before your visa expires. Overstaying may result in fines, detention, or difficulties with future entry. Always confirm the exact terms of your visa at the time of issue.
Extending Your Visa
If you need to stay beyond your initial visa period, it may be possible to apply for an extension at the Immigration Service (Service de l'Immigration) in Antananarivo or at regional offices. Procedures and fees are subject to change.
- Apply before your current visa expires
- Bring your passport, photos, proof of accommodation, and the fee
- Processing can take several days — apply early
Long-term Visa & Residence
Transformable Visa (Visa Transformable)
For longer stays, a "visa transformable" may be required — a special visa that can be converted into a long-stay visa once in Madagascar. This type of visa is generally requested at a Malagasy embassy or consulate before travelling. Contact the nearest embassy for current availability and requirements.
Residence Permit (Carte de Résident)
Long-term residents may be eligible to apply for a residence permit (carte de résident). Requirements and procedures should be confirmed directly with the Malagasy immigration authorities or through a local legal advisor. Typical requirements may include proof of income, clean criminal record, and medical certificate, but these can vary.
Investor & Business Visa
Foreign investors and business owners may benefit from facilitated visa procedures. The Economic Development Board of Madagascar (EDBM) is a useful point of contact for information on company registration, work permits, and investment-related visas. Visit the EDBM website or contact them directly for current procedures.
Always keep a photocopy of your passport and visa in a separate place. Carry your passport at all times — police may request identification. If you lose your passport, contact your country's nearest embassy or consulate immediately.
Registration
Foreign visitors staying in hotels or guesthouses are automatically registered by the establishment. If you are staying in a private residence, you should register with the local fokontany (neighbourhood authority) within a few days of arrival. For long-term stays, registration with the immigration authorities is mandatory.
