Electricity: Power production exceeds network demand in Antsiranana
Electricity production capacity continues to increase across Madagascar, according to Jirama. The capacity is progressing in numerous regions of the island. However, the network remains vulnerable, which favors technical failures and outages. The improvement of electricity production capacity is advancing rapidly in several regions of the island. New generators are gradually being put into service, while solar projects are multiplying. Despite these advances, outages still occur, particularly due to the vulnerability of the transport and distribution network, regularly exposed to technical incidents. In Antsiranana, the strengthening of supply is beginning to show results. On July 16, 2026, the total available power of thermal plants reached 10.4 MW. Jirama's plant at Amporaha provided 5.6 MW, while operator ENELEC contributed an additional 4.8 MW. During the day, this capacity is reinforced by 1.5 MW from the solar plant. Total available production thus reached 11.9 MW in the afternoon, for an estimated network demand of 8.6 MW. This margin should help better secure the city's electricity supply and reduce the production deficit previously recorded. Network reinforcement. According to Jirama, efforts continue to maintain equipment in working order. Generator DG9 was connected to the network on July 15 at 5 p.m., before undergoing technical inspection the following day. Technicians are also continuing repairs to DG5, following detection of an anomaly during commissioning tests. Increased production is not always sufficient to guarantee continuous supply. Network failures, equipment breakdowns, and maintenance operations can still cause interruptions. Strengthening and modernizing transport and distribution infrastructure thus appears essential to support increased production. Meanwhile, investments in renewable energy continue. In Nandihizana, in Manjakandriana district, the municipal council approved on July 13 the allocation to the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons of a 3.40-hectare plot. The site will host a solar plant intended to strengthen the supply of the rural municipality of Nandihizana Carion, as well as the Antananarivo interconnected network. For observers, these projects reflect a desire to sustainably increase electricity supply. Their effectiveness will depend on the ability to make the entire network reliable so that each megawatt produced can reach users without interruption.
