Bicycle taxis are parked along roadsides in the capital despite being unauthorized to operate passenger transport services. Several sectors of the capital have also become parking areas for these vehicles, notably in Anosy, Ambohidahy, Ankadimbahoaka, Isotry, and Ampefiloha. Some drivers even manage to operate in Analakely, despite the ban.

However, in a statement released this weekend, the Urban Municipality of Antananarivo (CUA) reminds that "bicycle taxis, cycle rickshaws, and tricycles are not authorized to operate passenger transport services on CUA territory." Aware of this prohibition, some drivers attempt to evade controls. They monitor their surroundings and disperse when they spot municipal police.

"I know I'm not authorized to operate here, but we watch our surroundings and scatter when municipal police are around," says Tojo Rabefarihy, a bicycle taxi driver in Anosy. He also acknowledges limited knowledge of traffic regulations: "I drive based on my basic understanding of traffic laws."

The presence of these bicycle taxis in busy downtown areas could disrupt traffic flow and increase accident risks, particularly in sectors where vehicles travel at high speeds. Like all road users, their drivers must comply with traffic regulations.

The municipality reiterates that these vehicles cannot be used for public passenger transport in the capital.
