Demonstrators are calling for the construction of a pedestrian footbridge, installation of speed limit signs, and stricter enforcement of laws against speeding and hit-and-run offenses. The mobilization was triggered by a tragedy on Thursday, July 16, in the late afternoon. A 46-year-old father and his 18-year-old daughter were crossing at a designated pedestrian crossing when they were violently struck by a 4x4 vehicle traveling at high speed, according to witnesses. The impact threw both victims several meters away. Seriously injured, the father was evacuated to a hospital, while his daughter died at the scene. The driver fled immediately. For residents, this tragedy is just the latest in a long series. They claim dozens of people have already lost their lives at this location, where drivers allegedly ignore pedestrian crossings and speed limits. They argue that existing speed bumps are insufficient and condemn drivers who speed despite the area's heavy urban traffic. According to the Tsaralalàna Accident Brigade, the vehicle and its driver remain actively sought. An investigation is underway to identify them and clarify the circumstances of the hit-and-run. Police dispersed the morning protest using tear gas to restore traffic flow. No injuries or deaths were recorded during the intervention. Once again, a fatal accident followed by a hit-and-run has reignited debate over road safety in the capital. Beyond their grief, residents are demanding concrete measures to prevent this section of the Tsarasaotra Ring Road from claiming more lives.
