A kidnapping attempt coupled with a vehicle theft was thwarted on July 15 in Ambohimanambola thanks to the victim's composure, swift intervention by residents, and the responsiveness of the Gendarmerie. Three people, including the alleged mastermind, were arrested in connection with the incident. At approximately 1:58 p.m., the territorial brigade of the Ambohimanambola Gendarmerie was alerted that a taxi driver was being subjected to a kidnapping attempt. Several teams were immediately deployed to the scene. According to initial investigation findings, two men had boarded the taxi and asked the driver to take them to Batou Beach. Upon reaching an isolated area, the two passengers launched their attack. One of them, seated in the back, attempted to strangle the driver, while his accomplice in the front threatened him with a knife to seize control of the vehicle. Despite the assault, the driver managed to keep his composure. He managed to trigger his taxi's anti-theft alarm while calling for help. The siren noise and the victim's cries quickly drew the attention of local residents, who intervened and subdued the two attackers. The assailants were violently beaten by the crowd before a gendarmerie patrol arrived and ended the lynching. During interrogation, the two suspects claimed they acted on orders from a third man. According to their statements, this man had recruited them to kidnap the taxi driver, whom he suspected of having a relationship with his wife. Driven by jealousy, the alleged mastermind was also arrested for organizing the criminal attempt. The arrested individuals are two men aged 25, from Isotry, and 43, residing in Itaosy, as well as the alleged mastermind. The taxi driver emerged unharmed from the assault. The two main suspects, however, were injured during the beating by residents. They were taken to a health center for necessary treatment before being placed in custody. The three suspects are expected to be referred to justice upon completion of the investigation.
