Scientific streams are struggling to attract future baccalaureate students. Series C, in particular, is on the verge of disappearing. Series C is generating increasing disinterest among baccalaureate candidates. For the 2026 session, they represent only 0.67% of all registered students. This share was still 1.05% four years ago and 1.87% ten years ago. "This series no longer exists in public schools, where the former series A, C and D have been replaced by Literature (L), Scientific (S) and Organisation-Society-Economy (OSE) streams," explains a public secondary school teacher to account for this downward trend. However, even in private schools that maintain the old system, the number of Series C candidates remains particularly low. "Students are reluctant to deepen their scientific studies, so they prefer to go to series A or D. In series C, the coefficients are so high that it's very difficult to pass the baccalaureate without very good grades, over 15/20, in mathematics," says Andovola Rabetsimba, director of the private Diadema secondary school in Ampatsakana. This establishment, for example, has about thirty candidates this year, only two of whom are in series C. Ideal Profile Antananarivo province records the highest number of candidates in this series, with 886 registered. Conversely, Antsiranana has only ten, Analanjirofo six, and Sava just three. Scientists regret this situation. Holders of a series C baccalaureate would constitute the ideal profile for admission to the École supérieure polytechnique, even though this institution accepts candidates from all scientific series, as well as technical and technological streams. "As an engineering school, the École supérieure polytechnique trains professionals for whom mathematical modeling (an essential tool for understanding and solving complex real-world problems) is crucial. This is an exercise in which series C graduates are particularly comfortable," says Professor Mamy Alain Rakotomalala, director of the École supérieure polytechnique d'Antananarivo. Series C is essentially devoted to mathematics. Teachers in this discipline believe that the programs of the new series are less comprehensive than that of series C. "Series S, for example, lacks geometry, while series C covered the program in depth. The ideal would be to restore series C. But if we must keep the current system, it becomes urgent to enrich its content," recommends a mathematician. The latter recalls that series C graduates have far more career opportunities than those from other series.
