Since the start of the mpox epidemic in Madagascar, 70 of the country's 120 districts have been affected by mpox. Currently, the epidemic is present in 40 of them. According to the latest situation report on the mpox epidemic, Madagascar recorded 28 new cases reported as of July 14, 2026, of which 22 tested positive. These 22 newly confirmed cases are located respectively in the districts of Antsiranana I (12 cases), Tolagnaro (4 cases), Toliara II (3 cases), and 1 case each in the following districts: Mahajanga I, Mananjary, and Morondava. To date, 70 districts have recorded at least one mpox case since the epidemic began in the country, including 40 active districts.

According to available statistics, there have been a total of 4,350 reported cases, of which 3,914 were tested, resulting in 2,823 positive cases, representing an overall positivity rate of 72.12%. Additionally, 2,003 recoveries and 17 deaths have been recorded since mpox appeared in Madagascar at the end of 2025. Over the past four weeks, the districts of Toamasina I, Tolagnaro, and Antananarivo Renivohitra lead in new cases: 129 in Toamasina I, representing 29%, 55 in Tolagnaro, representing 12%, and 45 in Antananarivo Renivohitra, representing 10%.
Vaccine
Recall that the mpox vaccine is again available in Madagascar. Vaccination is recommended by health authorities for people at risk of contracting the disease. According to the World Health Organization, the vaccine can be administered before virus exposure, in which case it reduces the risk of infection, but also after exposure, reducing the risk of developing symptoms or severe disease.
