Madagascar is experimenting with mobile telephony without terrestrial networks. Airtel Madagascar is testing SpaceX's Direct-to-Cell technology. This innovation allows a 4G smartphone to connect directly to a satellite when no terrestrial mobile network is available. The experiment was conducted in Sadabe, in the presence of the Minister of Digital Development, Digital Transformation, Posts and Telecommunications, representatives of the National Disaster Risk Management Bureau (BNGRC), and the Communications Technology Regulatory Authority (ARTEC). "The Government encourages innovation and remains open to any technology that can accelerate digital inclusion for all Malagasy people. Our ambition is to guarantee increasingly broad access to digital services, in compliance with our regulatory framework, digital sovereignty and security requirements," declared Mahefa Andriamampiadana, Minister of Digital Development, Digital Transformation, Posts and Telecommunications of Madagascar. The experiment was successful. "Participants were able to observe a 4G smartphone seamlessly connect to the satellite network, enabling WhatsApp message exchanges, WhatsApp voice and video calls, as well as access to streaming services and social networks such as YouTube and Facebook," according to an Airtel Madagascar press release. Airtel Madagascar thus becomes the first operator in the country to test this innovation. "Being the first operator to experiment with Direct-to-Cell in Madagascar reflects our ambition: to ensure that innovations transforming global telecommunications also benefit Malagasy people," affirmed Anne Catherine Tchokonté, General Director of Airtel Madagascar. Direct-to-Cell opens new perspectives for improving connectivity in certain isolated areas and strengthening communication continuity.
