The African Union and the United Nations have renewed their commitment to support Madagascar in implementing its Refoundation process. Through a joint mission visiting the island from July 12 to 19, 2026, both organizations have demonstrated their willingness to back the reforms undertaken by Malagasy authorities, in line with guidelines set by the African Union's Peace and Security Council. This support focuses particularly on strengthening institutions, consolidating the rule of law, and supporting administrative transformations, while respecting national sovereignty. This commitment was reaffirmed on Monday, July 13, during a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between a delegation led by Mohamed Idriss Farah, Special Envoy of the African Union Commission for Madagascar, and Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to the African Union, and Malagasy authorities. On this occasion, the Foreign Minister welcomed the strengthened partnership with both organizations, particularly through implementation of the African Facility for Support to Inclusive Transitions (AFSIT), presented as a tool to accompany ongoing institutional reforms. The Malagasy government also reaffirmed its commitment to maintain close dialogue with the United Nations, the African Union, and SADC to coordinate international support and mobilize resources necessary for successful reforms. For the authorities, this cooperation should make Refoundation a sustainable lever for peace, stability, and development. By reaffirming their availability to support Madagascar throughout this process, the African Union and the United Nations confirm their intention to remain privileged partners in the institutional transformations undertaken by the country.
