In Toamasina, reality has quickly caught up with promises. Despite assurances that power cuts would end yesterday in this port city, several neighborhoods continue to suffer from increasingly unbearable electricity outages. "Yesterday, in our neighborhood, the power was cut from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., then from 9 p.m. to after 10 p.m. This morning, the outage has already lasted over an hour," recounted a resident yesterday. Others reported that power was cut at least seven times during Monday. Filatex Energy, Jirama's partner in supplying electricity to Toamasina, admits that electricity supply has not yet been fully restored. "The Toamasina IV power plant is currently going through a difficult period, as this unit is not yet fully operational, and our technicians are working to resolve the issue," said Tahina Ramaromandray, director of public relations for Filatex Group. There was reportedly a "minor incident" during maintenance work. "There's an engine we really hoped would start Saturday evening, but it still isn't working. This matter is among our absolute priorities this week," he added. Authorities visited the site yesterday to assess work progress, particularly the restart of unit number 11, which has a capacity of 18 MW. Meanwhile, another team is working on unit number 10. "We are doing everything possible to have it completed by the end of July to provide an additional 4 MW to the network. Furthermore, unit number 8 is also undergoing repairs; its restart is scheduled for August 15," explained Tahina Ramaromandray. In addition to unit number 8 expected in mid-August, Filatex Energy has acquired a brand new generator that arrived Friday at Toamasina port. Installation is underway and will significantly increase the city's power generation capacity. "Thanks to all these efforts, our goal is to stabilize the situation by the end of July, when these additional engines will boost electricity production," concluded Tahina Ramaromandray.
