Concrete bollards along Ankiembe Boulevard have been damaged. The reinforcing steel inside concrete bollards along the new Ankiembe dike has been stripped. Over approximately one hundred meters, starting from Ankiembe landing in the direction of the airport, the concrete bollards are damaged. Four or five bollards are damaged over a length of about twelve meters, then three or four remain untouched by vandals, then the following bollards are stripped, and so on. On some bollards, the steel was not removed, but the bollards appear to have been deliberately destroyed. The thieves seem to have chosen a location with little foot traffic from fishermen, boatmen, or residents. Morning joggers, many of whom use this new dike for running, alerted authorities to the deliberate destruction of infrastructure on social media. The boulevard is five kilometers long and connects Toliara port to National Road 7 at Toliara airport level, while protecting the coastal neighborhoods of Ankiembe and Motombe. It was inaugurated in May last year. The highway construction was financed by the European Investment Bank. The road also serves as a bypass route to relieve traffic congestion in the city, particularly for heavy vehicles.
