Royal palms lining Independence Avenue in Toamasina's urban commune are being cut down in a safety operation. The work targets trees and branches deemed weakened and at risk of falling, posing potential threats to pedestrians and nearby infrastructure.
Although this species is renowned for its resistance to strong winds, some specimens have been damaged by cyclones and now present dangers. "While known for their wind resistance, certain royal palms damaged after cyclone passage now pose risks to pedestrians and surrounding infrastructure. Cutting operations are underway to secure Independence Avenue," stated Toamasina's urban commune in a statement released yesterday.
Operations have already begun. The intervention aims to prevent accidents and enhance safety on one of the city's busiest thoroughfares. "Authorities should consider removing all these palms and planting new ones to restore a better image to Toamasina," suggests Annicet Jonasy, a neighborhood resident.
