A man suspected of attempting to kidnap an infant narrowly escaped being lynched Thursday morning in Anosimasina, in the fokontany of the same name, a rural commune in Bemasoandro, Antananarivo-Atsimondrano district. Quick intervention by law enforcement allowed authorities to remove him from the crowd's anger. Around 10:30 a.m., the commander of the Bemasoandro gendarmerie outpost was alerted by a resident reporting that a suspected abductor had just been apprehended. Three gendarmes immediately went to the scene to assess the situation. According to the child's mother, she was heading to the market with her baby in her arms when she encountered an individual behind Anosimasina's electrical transformer. The man allegedly attempted to snatch her child from her. By putting up strong resistance and calling for help, the young woman was bitten on the hand by the suspect. The victim's screams quickly attracted neighbors, who managed to restrain the man. Highly agitated, several residents were preparing to lynch him before police from the Antampon'Itaosy precinct, supported by Bemasoandro gendarmes, intervened to arrest him. To ensure his safety, the suspect was secured in the fokontany offices. Around 11 a.m., police evacuated the man by vehicle to the Antampon'Itaosy precinct, amid jeers from a large crowd gathered outside the fokontany office determined to administer mob justice. According to the suspect's relatives, he suffers from mental health issues. They claim to possess medical documents attesting to his health condition. Law enforcement reminded the public that mob justice is punishable by law and urged residents to report any suspicious activity to competent authorities rather than taking justice into their own hands. They also provided the phone number of the Bemasoandro gendarmerie outpost to facilitate reporting. The investigation has been assigned to the Antampon'Itaosy police precinct, which must determine the exact circumstances of this alleged kidnapping attempt.
