A spectacular accident caused panic during the second round of Madagascar's run championship yesterday morning in Arivonimamo. At 10:25 a.m., the Smart Drag—a legendary vehicle once piloted by late champion John Elite and recently acquired by Ricardo Randriananja—veered off the track in the final 200 meters of its course. The vehicle did not roll over but struck a parked truck near the finish line carrying sound and lighting equipment, before coming to rest under a tent where a lighting technician and a timekeeper were stationed. Both men were seriously injured and rushed to hospital. A cameraman was also slightly hurt. The driver, shocked but conscious, remained trapped in his vehicle for about fifteen minutes before being extracted and taken to hospital for examination. The Smart Drag, completely overhauled before the race, sustained major damage. Its right front and rear wheels were torn off, its steering wheel broken, and its fiberglass body largely destroyed. The rear engine appears to have been spared, but the right side of the vehicle is unusable. The race was halted for an hour to secure the area and clear debris before resuming around 11:30 a.m. This accident comes just one week after the Smart Drag's return to Arivonimamo was announced. The vehicle had made racing history under John Elite's driving, accumulating victories. For Ricardo Randriananja, an MSA club member, this was his first competition behind the wheel of this car, which had been absent from racing for several years. A spectator witnessed: 'We saw a pole collapse with the camera and lighting. The car remained upright, immobilized under the tent tarp. The rims on the right side were crushed by impact. The body couldn't withstand it—it fell apart. From the first run, we noticed the driver drifting slightly at the start. On the second run, the start was good, but the car drifted again in the final meters, and that's when the tragedy occurred.'
