An armed attack on a wholesale distributor of essential goods was thwarted during the night of Tuesday, July 7, in the urban commune of Betafo, Vakinankaratra region. Gendarmerie intervention resulted in the neutralization of two dangerous bandits, recovery of a MAS 36 military rifle, and the escape of several accomplices. The incident occurred after Betafo's territorial brigade received intelligence about a planned attack on the "Ny Anjara" wholesale business. According to the information, the group had been preparing the assault for several days, and the presumed leader was allegedly involved in a recent armed attack in Andranomanelatra, Antsirabe II district. In response, gendarmes deployed a significant operation. Twelve officers were mobilized, four to secure the targeted business and eight positioned in ambush. Around 11:30 p.m., several armed individuals on foot were spotted approaching their target. Surprised by law enforcement, they allegedly opened fire to force their way through. Gendarmes returned fire. Two assailants were fatally struck, while their accomplices escaped into the darkness. The operation resulted in the seizure of a MAS 36 military rifle loaded with three cartridges and a homemade weapon. No gendarmerie casualties were reported. Investigations revealed the two neutralized individuals were known for suspected involvement in multiple serious crimes. One had been wanted for seven years and was suspected of participating in an armed robbery followed by murder committed last year in Andranobe, Antsirabe II district, and the Savasahona attack in Betafo district on June 15. The second was known for banditry and cattle theft in the rural commune of Ambatonikolahy. The bodies were taken to the morgue of Betafo district referral hospital. Investigations continue to locate other gang members who escaped.
