An international colloquium on the effects of climate on resources and societies has begun at Toliara University. The international colloquium titled "Climate, Natural Resources and Society: Challenges and Solutions for a Sustainable Future" started yesterday at Toliara University. Malagasy and foreign researchers, teachers, development actors and students have gathered to produce tangible and practical resolutions for the country by today. The impacts of climate on societies and resources—including water depletion, drought and the scarcity of marine resources—have been highlighted, but solutions are proving more urgent. "The colloquium aims to provide scientific knowledge, but especially practical solutions, taking into account the value of traditional knowledge. An adaptation strategy to face climate challenges is eagerly awaited from this exchange meeting," emphasized Francis Veriza, president of Toliara University. Scientific presentations, scientific poster displays and project presentations will continue to animate the international colloquium today. The university president stressed the urgency of proposing solutions to the highest state authorities. "It is time we provide solutions. It is time to demonstrate that we are researchers in addition to being teachers," he said in his opening address. "We are training the unemployed. We must guide them. Beyond sharing scientific knowledge, we have a duty to support them so they can practically face life after five years at university," he added. It was noted that from now on, the best student in each field of study will be rewarded. Today, discussions will focus on traditional knowledge and sustainable management, as well as strategies and solutions for adapting to climate challenges.
