The mpox epidemic continues to spread in Madagascar, with 36 active districts currently identified, while 69 districts have been affected by mpox since the epidemic began in the country at the end of 2025. A new death linked to mpox was recorded this week: an elderly man died from the disease on July 7, 2026, in the Sofia region. This brings the death toll to 16 since the start of the epidemic in Madagascar. On the same day, July 7, 22 mpox cases were reported, of which 18 tested positive. These 18 confirmed cases are located respectively in the districts of Tolagnaro (6 cases), Mananjary (4 cases), Antananarivo Renivohitra (2 cases), Antsiranana II (2 cases), Antsiranana I (3 cases), and Fénérive-Est (1 case). Toamasina I remains the district with the highest number of confirmed cases over the past four weeks. In total, 4,165 mpox cases have been reported, with 2,672 confirmed cases out of 3,712 tested results, representing a positivity rate of 72%. Additionally, 1,834 recoveries have been recorded, with the latest 6 recoveries registered on July 7, 2026. Beyond observing basic preventive measures to minimize transmission, vaccination is a key strategy promoted by health authorities to stop mpox spread across the island. Vaccine doses are again available and being distributed to different regions of the island.
