Vehicle checks targeting tinted windows are intensifying in Antananarivo. Motorists were subjected to verifications conducted by law enforcement yesterday. At Ambohibao Bongatsara, a car with tinted windows lowered its windows as it approached a checkpoint yesterday morning. Like this driver, many motorists underwent inspections carried out by police forces deployed across several strategic routes in Antananarivo.
As part of kidnapping prevention and criminal investigation operations, the Ambohidratrimo gendarmerie company, under the Analamanga gendarmerie grouping, conducted a road control operation yesterday. Beyond routine checks, officers paid particular attention to vehicles equipped with tinted windows. Inspections were conducted without distinction, regardless of vehicle type or owner identity.
"In total, thirty vehicles were inspected. Among them, twenty-five were in compliance and had the necessary authorizations to circulate with tinted windows. Three drivers agreed to immediately remove the tinted films from their windows to comply with regulations. However, two vehicles were cited for non-compliance with current provisions," states a National Police statement.
Authorities indicated these control operations will continue in coming days to strengthen security and combat crime. "The objective is to enforce regulations, reassure the population, and strengthen the fight against criminality in a context marked by a surge in criminal acts," explains a National Police source.
Motorists' reactions at checkpoints were mixed. "My windows are tinted. However, I understand these controls if they improve safety. If regularization is necessary, I'm ready to take steps," said a driver checked at Ambohibao.
Among the public, these operations are well-received. "We hear a lot about kidnappings and assaults lately. Seeing law enforcement on the ground reassures us," testified Rasoatiana, a merchant stationed near a checkpoint. "Vehicles with heavily tinted windows often raise suspicion because you can't see who's inside. If controls can discourage criminals, we support them," she added.
These operations follow new measures announced by authorities to address recent child kidnappings and homicides. All vehicles, including those of authorities, can now be checked. Vehicle owners with unauthorized tinted windows are invited to remove them or regularize their situation.
"If no infraction is found and the driver presents no suspicious elements, law enforcement invites them to bring their vehicle into compliance with regulations. Two options are then proposed: obtain official authorization for tinted windows or replace them with windows conforming to current standards," explains a police officer on the ground.
These measures aim primarily to strengthen protection for road users, enforce legislation, and make crime-fighting operations more effective in the current security context.
