Two Dead After Subaru Plunges Into Water on Tsarasaotra–Ivato Ring Road
Another tragic traffic accident has struck the Tsarasaotra–Ivato Ring Road. Two young men, aged 23 and 29, drowned after their Subaru left the roadway and plunged into a body of water during the night of Sunday to Monday. The accident occurred around 1 a.m. at kilometer 7+500 of the Tsarasaotra–Ivato Ring Road, at the Ambodifasina intersection in the fokontany of Ambodifasina, rural commune of Ambatolampy Tsimahafotsy, Ambohidratrimo district. The vehicle was heading toward Ivato when it suddenly veered off the road and dove into waters near Lake Iarivo. Alerted, gendarmes quickly arrived at the scene where rescue teams were already mobilized. Despite rescue operations, both occupants remained trapped in the submerged vehicle and did not survive. Initial findings suggest loss of control in a slight curve. Excessive speed appears to have caused the vehicle to leave the road. Investigations also reveal evidence suggesting the driver was intoxicated. Gendarmes detected a strong smell of alcohol on the victims and discovered several bottles of alcoholic beverages, including beers, inside the vehicle. At this stage, authorities are prioritizing the drunk driving hypothesis without ruling out other possibilities. An investigation is underway to establish the precise circumstances of the accident. This tragedy comes just days after another fatal accident at the exact same location. This succession of tragedies has renewed concerns about safety on this section of the Tsarasaotra–Ivato Ring Road. While the road configuration may be a risk factor, speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol remain among the leading causes of serious road accidents. Authorities urge drivers to exercise extra caution, respect speed limits, and never drive after consuming alcohol to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
