Tiana Andriatsihoarana, president of the Malagasy national committee, Tojotsara Ratefason, director of Protected Areas, Renewable Natural Resources and Ecosystems at the MEDD, and Luther Anukur, regional director of the IUCN. An IUCN national committee (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) was officially established during a workshop held on July 2-3, 2026 at the ILO Hotel Anosiala, Ambohidratrimo. The workshop, under the supervision of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, is co-financed by FAPBM, Conservation Allies and IUCN projects. The event took place in the presence of Luther Anukur, regional director of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), a global organization founded in 1948, bringing together more than 1,500 member organizations and 19,000 experts mobilized in over 160 countries. This national committee, composed of 14 members from ministries, NGOs and foundations, aims to be a national platform for dialogue and mobilization of expertise. Its executive board is chaired by Manantsoa Tiana Andriatsihoarana, with the mission to harmonize conservation strategies, influence environmental policies and strengthen the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP). Madagascar, which hosts nearly 5% of global biodiversity and exceptional endemism rates, already benefits from technical and financial support from the IUCN. The national committee must now consolidate synergies, promote sustainable use of natural resources and contribute to the creation of green jobs, in order to make biodiversity a true lever for sustainable development.
