Backfilling work is underway at the water treatment station construction site in Amoronakona. "This backfilling is part of the preparatory work for infrastructure construction. The structures will rest on this embankment," explained a source from the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene yesterday.
The priority objective is to complete this backfilling before the rainy season. "Other types of work can continue even in case of rainfall," the source added. To date, work progress stands at 5%. "This is perfectly in line with the initial schedule," the same source assured.
Construction work began in December 2025 with the laying of the foundation stone for this future water production station in Amoronakona. This major project is part of the "Jirama Water III Priority" program, financed by the European Investment Bank and the European Union.
Located on the right bank of the Ikopa, the new Amoronakona treatment station is designed to produce 2,500 m³ of drinking water per hour, with raw water intake from the Ikopa. This infrastructure will integrate a complete clarification and disinfection system.
To optimize the network, the project also provides for the construction of a ground reservoir with a capacity of 1,500 m³ in Ambohibe, as well as the deployment of over 23 kilometers of water pipes. These will supply the northern zones, up to Analamahitsy, and southern zones, up to Iavoloha. Commissioning and testing phases are scheduled for September 2027.
