An unprecedented claim marks a turning point in Madagascar's security climate. After shots fired by the presidential guard Friday evening in Ivandry at a drone following the president of the Refoundation of the Republic's convoy, a group calling itself 'Sampana Tsikilo Madagasikara' claims responsibility for the operation. In a video posted on social media, a man with military appearance, whose identity remains unestablished, states the action was a warning to the head of state and his entourage. According to this declaration, the group threatens to escalate if its demands are not met. Its spokesperson claims ability to pursue the presidential convoy, send drones to Ambohitsirohotra and Iavoloha, even declaring intent to 'set fire to the presidential convoy column'. He specifies giving the president of the Refoundation one month to respond to his demands and those of other movements, notably GEN Z. However, the individual does not disclose the exact nature of requests allegedly made to authorities. The group extends threats to several close associates of power, notably the National Assembly president. In his video, he also references Russia, claiming the devices used are Ukrainian drones. He asserts readiness to target Russian interests collaborating with the current regime if Russia intervenes against what he calls 'strategic locations'. The 'Sampana Tsikilo Madagasikara' leader presents this operation as the second warning to authorities. He recalls drone overflights above the presidential residence last April. At that time, he had explained these flights involved a protection contract with transition authorities and CAPSAT to ensure the head of state's security for two years. He had also claimed several foreign nationals close to the former regime were near Colonel Michael Randrianirina's home. This group had previously manifested during September 2025 demonstrations, warning the Gendarmerie Intervention Group against potential protester repression, threatening drone attacks. These threats ultimately never materialized. Facing this claim, the president of the Refoundation of the Republic delivered his first public reaction Saturday during a ceremony at the Personnel Administration Corps camp of Administrative and Technical Services (CAPSAT) in Soanierana. Colonel Michael Randrianirina apologized to the population for gunfire from presidential security in Ivandry, acknowledging detonations caused panic among residents. The head of state explained the drone following his convoy was first observed Thursday evening before reappearing the next day. According to him, this repetition led security personnel to demonstrate their reaction capacity. He nevertheless sought to reassure the population, stating Antananarivo experienced neither riots nor insurrection and defense and security forces continued normal operations. Beyond the incident itself, Colonel Randrianirina believes these events fit a broader destabilization strategy. He suspects a plot to create psychological panic to convince the international community Madagascar is in chaos. Without naming individuals, he referenced people abroad allegedly seeking to weaken the country while it pursues recovery. The head of state also links the drone affair to recent increased insecurity, marked by armed attacks, kidnappings, mutilated body discoveries, and drug circulation. In his view, these facts participate in the same destabilization strategy. He thus called on the population to collaborate more with defense and security forces to identify perpetrators. At this stage, no authority has confirmed 'Sampana Tsikilo Madagasikara' claims regarding involvement in drone overflights or the means it claims to possess. The investigation opened following Friday's incidents must notably establish the devices' origin, their real objectives, and credibility of claims posted on social media.
