Saturday was particularly turbulent in several neighborhoods of the capital. Two people suspected of attempting to kidnap children were apprehended by residents within hours of each other. These incidents triggered strong emotions among inhabitants and escalated into acts of vandalism against the Ilanivato police station. The first case occurred around 9 a.m. in Antanimena Ambilanibe, in Antananarivo IV district. A woman in her twenties is suspected of attempting to take away two girls aged 12 and 5 years old. According to information gathered, she allegedly approached the two children and offered to accompany them to buy biscuits. As they were moving away, the older girl allegedly suddenly understood the situation and began screaming that she did not know the woman taking them. Alerted by her cries for help, relatives and neighbors quickly intervened and pursued the suspect before apprehending her. Handed over to officers at the Ilanivato police station, the young woman was placed in custody for investigation purposes. Facing the growing anger of the crowd gathered outside the police station and demanding she be handed over to mob justice, law enforcement decided to transfer her to the offices of the Police for Morals and Child Protection (PMPM) in Tsaralalàna. It was during her evacuation that stones were allegedly thrown at police officers and their vehicle. Moments later, a second incident further inflamed tensions. This time, another person, also suspected of attempting to kidnap a child of approximately four years old in Ampefiloha Ambodirano, was pursued by residents. According to initial testimonies, the suspect allegedly picked up the child in his arms before abandoning him and fleeing after being noticed. Caught by the crowd, he allegedly sought refuge at the Ilanivato police station to escape violence. Police officers intervened to extract him from the hands of the population and take him to a hospital for treatment. According to initial information, he was seriously injured during his apprehension by the crowd. Witnesses also claim that objects resembling 'ody gasy' were found in his bag, information that remains to be confirmed during the investigation. The arrival of this second suspect at the police station reignited residents' anger. Groups of protesters gathered outside the premises before the situation escalated. The Ilanivato police station became a target and suffered significant material damage.
