The fight against crime and corruption is taking on new dimensions in Madagascar. Yesterday morning, the Iavoloha State Palace hosted a highly strategic meeting between the President of the Refoundation, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, and Ali El Bereir, regional representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Currently visiting the island, he is actively participating in Madagascar's second cycle evaluation on anti-corruption efforts. This audience allowed the UN diplomat to detail the concrete missions of UNODC, a pivotal UN body dedicated to combating drug proliferation, organized transnational crime, terrorism, and corruption. Targeted Collaborations UNODC is not new to Madagascar. The UN agency is already deploying substantial efforts there, particularly through targeted collaborations on maritime crime, environmental crime—a major issue for Madagascar's biodiversity—and protecting minors from sexual exploitation. For the President of the Refoundation, this meeting was an opportunity to reaffirm his administration's hardline stance. Colonel Michaël Randrianirina shared the country's progress and efforts, stressing that fighting corruption remains an "absolute priority" for the Refoundation government. The shared objective following this meeting is clear: intensify and sustain cooperation between Madagascar and UNODC to durably improve the island's socio-economic environment.
