A macabre discovery has once again highlighted the surge in tomb desecrations recently observed in the Ambohidratrimo district. This time, three sepulchers were desecrated in the fokontany of Ambato, commune of Ambato. The perpetrators forced open the vaults before stealing some of the remains inside, reigniting concerns about the increase in this phenomenon in recent months. The incidents were reported on the evening of June 29, 2026, by the fokontany chief of Ambato to the Merimandroso Gendarmerie outpost. Alerted, the gendarmes immediately proceeded to the scene, located about thirty kilometers from their unit, accompanied by local authorities, mobile unit members, the owners of the affected sepulchers, and several residents. Investigations revealed that three tombs, spaced about fifty meters apart, had been forced open. The first vault contained twelve deceased. The second housed five, but according to the owners, only two bodies remained at the time of inspection, suggesting that remains of three individuals had disappeared. However, no remains appear to have been taken from the third tomb, as the last person buried there was interred recently. This latest act of desecration adds to a series of similar incidents recorded in various regions of the country. While the motives of those responsible remain to be determined in this case, these thefts of remains have caused deep distress among families and communities, as they violate the respect owed to the deceased and Malagasy funeral traditions. The owners of the sepulchers have been invited to file complaints. Residents have been urged to increase vigilance by monitoring family vaults. An investigation has been opened by the Gendarmerie to identify those responsible and shed light on this new case.
