The mpox epidemic continues to spread across Madagascar, based on the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Public Health. Fourteen deaths linked to mpox have been recorded since the epidemic began in the country just over six months ago, with the latest deaths occurring at the end of last week. According to the latest briefing presented by the incident manager of the National Public Health Emergency Operations Center (COUSP), released on June 29, 2026, the two most recent deaths include a 12-day-old newborn in Antananarivo, Analamanga region, and another patient in the Anosy region, described as a "vulnerable person." The epidemic shows no signs of declining. According to the latest situation report, the country has recorded 3,817 notified cases, of which 2,408 have been confirmed through testing. On June 28, 2026, the date of the latest mpox figures, 16 new cases were notified, 16 samples were tested, and 16 cases were confirmed. These figures show that all 16 tested cases came back positive, representing a 100% positivity rate for cases recorded on June 28 before noon. The incident manager of the national COUSP emphasized that mpox is currently experiencing a high transmission rate within the population. All preventive measures are strongly recommended. As a reminder, mpox is transmitted through close contact with an infected person, including skin-to-skin contact, through saliva droplets when coughing, via objects used by the patient, through sexual contact even with protection, and from mother to child. Vaccination is strongly advised. However, the vaccine stock is currently depleted, according to the incident manager of the national COUSP. A new shipment of vaccines is expected imminently.
