An expulsion operation targeting street vendors. A sector of Andravoahangy was hit yesterday morning by traffic congestion and smoke emissions caused by burning tires. Street vendors protested by waving banners and burning tires on the road between Andravoahangy and Ambodivona. "We demand to return to our usual location. Why are only the vendors stationed between Andravoahangy's public toilets and Ambodivona's Galana station being expelled, while vendors outside this zone are allowed to sell?" complained one merchant. Around thirty people demonstrated, carrying banners reading "Let us sell, solve our problems" and "We are tired, Andravoahangy Saint-Antoine, come to our aid," according to the National Police. Law enforcement arrived to maintain public order, dissuading protesters to preserve the safety of residents and road users. By 12:15 p.m., the situation had calmed without resorting to force, and traffic resumed normally. These vendors were expelled last week. They plan to resume activities on sidewalks starting today. On the other hand, the Market management, under the Antananarivo Urban Municipality, reminds that sidewalk sales remain prohibited. "It is also a school route: there is no longer anywhere for schoolchildren to walk after leaving school, and no parking space for vehicles picking them up, as everything is occupied by vendors," lamented Gilles Randrianatoandro.
