Through a conference titled "Constructing the Future: Cyclone-proof Bamboo Construction" held on June 29, 2026 at IST Ampasapito, researchers, engineers and specialists demonstrated that bamboo is a sustainable solution, resistant to cyclones and beneficial for the environment. The discussions also highlighted international experiences, particularly that of the Byanyas Foundation in the Philippines, which illustrates the economic, social and ecological potential of this resource.

Presentations focused on bamboo's mechanical properties, its cyclone resistance, its contribution to reducing carbon emissions, and its role in preserving forest resources. Specialists also emphasized its economic and social benefits, particularly through job creation and development of a sustainable sector.

Among public concerns was bamboo propagation. Dr. Rado explained that rhizomes generally do not extend deeper than 60 centimeters. Only adventitious roots can slightly exceed this limit. For species with running roots, a trench of approximately 60 centimeters around the plantation is sufficient to prevent expansion.

Jean-Yves Razafindrakoto, president of the Malagasy Center for Bamboo Resources and Technologies (CMBART), provided additional clarification. According to him, bamboo remains an easily manageable plant since its root system remains shallow. He also explained that a rhizome exposed to open air survives only about 14 hours before drying out. In Madagascar, rhizome growth generally does not exceed 50 centimeters per day. They therefore lack the time necessary to cross a 60-centimeter protective barrier before dying, which significantly reduces uncontrolled propagation risks.

Participants also discovered the experience of the Byanyas Foundation, located in Napsan on Palawan Island, Philippines. This circular economy initiative takes its name from a traditional bamboo altar used by the indigenous Tagbanua community.

The foundation uses treated bamboo as an alternative to wood and concrete to limit deforestation. It constructs naturally ventilated ecological buildings, some reaching three stories, as well as stairs and interior structures entirely made of bamboo.

Beyond construction, the project promotes socio-economic integration of local communities. A production center trains residents and indigenous peoples in bamboo treatment for the building sector, as well as in furniture manufacturing, decorative objects and souvenirs inspired by traditional craftsmanship. This approach creates sustainable jobs while valorizing local resources.
