The Barea squad list for the first two matchdays of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers brings its share of novelties. To face Nigeria on September 25, then Tanzania four days later, Corentin Martins has notably decided to open the doors of the selection to two new players: Zacharie Boucher and Roman Ferber. Two recruits who present, on paper, interesting profiles. But their arrival also raises a question that is already animating discussions among Malagasy football enthusiasts. The FMF and the coach's tendency to turn to relatively older expatriates does not meet with unanimous approval. At 34 years old, Zacharie Boucher is obviously no longer a young prospect. But his career path is far from insignificant. Born in Réunion, the goalkeeper was trained at Le Havre before wearing the jerseys of Toulouse, Auxerre, Angers, Bastia and Aris Salonique in Greece. He currently plays for ESTAC Troyes. The case of Roman Ferber is somewhat different. At 33 years old, the Belgian striker plays for Atert Bissen in Luxembourg. He notably comes out of a particularly productive 2025-2026 season as he finished as the top scorer of the Luxembourg first division with 21 goals. But debates about the age of the Barea recruits remain topical. On one hand, the Barea need players capable of being immediately operational by calling on experienced elements. A 34-year-old goalkeeper and a 33-year-old striker can bring maturity, personality and knowledge of European top-level football. On the other hand, analysts believe that a national team should not be built solely for the next two matches. Indeed, if Madagascar wants to durably establish itself among the continent's competitive selections, it will necessarily need to prepare the next generation and have a core of younger players likely to gradually take over. It is in this context that the concerns of Barea fans are justified in preventing the national team from becoming a destination for a 'golden retirement' for players approaching the end of their European careers. Young players must also have their place.
