CHOR teams work alongside medical staff in Mahajanga. The CHOR MAHA project, Health Together, continues its rollout between Mahajanga and Réunion. Led by the West Réunion Hospital Center (CHOR), it aims to strengthen maternal and child health through targeted training at Sotema and Mahavoky health centers. "We are working on several areas: sexual health, antibiotic resistance, STI prevention, care organization and risk management. A biomedical engineer is also conducting an assessment to prepare for equipment arrival next year. We focus on theoretical training, but we also try to add practical components on certain topics, so staff can see how to use hydroalcoholic solutions, for example. On care organization, we try to develop tools together, in reconstruction, that they can then implement in the health centers to improve care organization. But really, our idea is to provide input while also fostering exchange," explains Anne-Gaëlle Bénard, project officer at CHOR. Funded by the European Union and the Réunion Region, the project has already trained 156 staff members during the first session in June. Dr Nirisoa Aimée Olga Randrianarimanana, head physician of Sotema health center, highlights the concrete impact: "It is a genuine exchange of experiences. We learn to better organize our work, manage our time, and improvements are already visible in our practices." Beyond technical contributions, the initiative is based on a dynamic of exchange and cooperation. Réunion teams praise the responsiveness and commitment of Malagasy staff, while local partners – the Health Ministry, DRSP, SDSP and the Tsiky association – ensure operational coordination. Together, they chart a common path to provide mothers and children with better quality care.
