Repeated thefts of electrical cables in several communes of the Itasy region continue to disrupt electricity supply, according to Jirama. Facing this situation, authorities now intend to strengthen prevention, surveillance and coordination to permanently end this phenomenon. A meeting dedicated to finding solutions was held on September 15, 2026 in Arivonimamo, led by the secretary general of the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons, Dr Rakotonandrasana Adolphe. It brought together elected officials, administrative officials and law enforcement. Discussions focused notably on recurring thefts recorded in the communes of Morarano, Antongona, Avarabohitra, Faharetana, Amboanana, Ambohitrambo, Soavimbazaha and Anjomabealoka. Participants expressed their willingness to combine efforts to secure electrical infrastructure and preserve continuity of supply to users. Community Surveillance Several measures have been adopted. These include establishing community vigilance systems in close collaboration with law enforcement, strengthening communication and increasing roadside checks. Authorities also plan to intensify civic awareness campaigns in both media and schools. Rapid replacement of stolen cables is also among priorities. In Soavimbazaha, the extent of damage proved far greater than expected: 28 km of cables were reportedly stolen, against an initial estimate of 12 km. A situation that illustrates the scale of losses and the urgency of a coordinated response.
