A year after the "Gen-Z" demonstrations, stone-throwing and tear gas have resurfaced. Tensions peaked yesterday on RN7 at Ambatofotsy. Transport workers and supporters, opposed to their relocation from Fasan'ny Karana bus station to the new Amoronakona facility, erected roadblocks, completely paralyzing traffic for several hours and causing major congestion in both directions. Clashes erupted. Early in the morning, several vehicles, including overcrowded minibuses bearing protest banners, left Fasan'ny Karana for Ambatofotsy. Strikers barricaded the road with stones, tree trunks, and burning tires. Around 11 a.m., no vehicles could pass through the area. Alerted, elements of the Mixed Operational Command (EMMO) rushed to the scene. Initially favoring negotiation, authorities explained to protesters that their demands should remain at Fasan'ny Karana and that blocking RN7 constituted a clear breach of public order. When strikers refused to comply, responding with stone-throwing, brush fires, and destruction of road signs, police deployed stronger measures. They used tear gas grenades to disperse the demonstrators, who continued retreating while maintaining disorder. The clashes left serious consequences. Several protesters were injured, including one found unconscious near the barricades who died during emergency evacuation to HJRA. While police cite trauma from stone impacts, sources suggest a head projectile may be responsible, noting only autopsy will determine the cause. In total, 16 people were arrested and taken to the Criminal Brigade for questioning. During the clashes, a vehicle carrying protesters forced a checkpoint at Bypass in Ifarihy before being stopped at Iavoloha, while another carrying stones for barricades was intercepted. In a statement, the Mixed Design Body and EMMO (OMC/EMMO) stressed that freedom does not mean anarchy in a state of law.
