Controls are becoming more effective, but repeated attempts show that trafficking networks remain highly active. The situation is improving in the fight against illegal trafficking. Interceptions since the start of the year demonstrate heightened vigilance from authorities, without discouraging those still attempting to smuggle the country's wealth. Latest incident: 5.75 kg of gold was intercepted Sunday, September 13 at Ivato international airport. Yesterday, facing media, Customs Director General Antoine Randrianjafy revisited this case. According to his account, the operation, led by Head of State Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, was made possible notably through reliable information. The Customs DG especially stressed the need for collaboration between all services and actors operating at the airport. The investigation continues. Several people have already been questioned and, according to Antoine Randrianjafy, anyone whose involvement is established must answer for their actions in accordance with the law, without exception.
Zero Tolerance
This latest interception adds to an already significant series. In the first half, Customs seized over 12 kg of gold in five operations, as well as precious stones, currency and protected species. In January, 5.16 kg of gold was notably discovered at Ivato in two modified power banks. In February, another passenger departing for Dubai was intercepted with 5.809 kg of ingots. For Customs, the stakes go beyond seizures. Border control, anti-corruption efforts and protection of national wealth now constitute the main fronts of a "zero tolerance" policy already announced by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Firmness also applies internally. Following conduct deemed inappropriate by an agent at Ivato on September 8, an internal investigation confirmed the facts and measures were taken against the individual. The message is therefore twofold: strengthen control of traffickers, but also set an example through those tasked with arresting them.
