The Théâtre Vollard of Réunion will present the "3 Overseas Operas" on October 1st and 2nd, 2026 at the Massy Opera House in Paris. This production brings together excerpts from Maraina (2005), Chin (2010), and Fridom (2020), three works composed by Jean-Luc Trulès with librettos by Emmanuel Genvrin. Over ninety minutes, audiences will discover three lyrical universes that together outline a new genre: overseas opera. Fundamentally classical in form through its orchestra, choirs, and soloists, it distinguishes itself through musical hybridization. Traditional strings and brass blend with island percussion and rhythms—maloya and salegy—as well as original vocal timbres such as Malagasy "blue voices." This fusion enriches opera without distorting it, giving it an identity rooted in the Indian Ocean. Maraina evokes Franco-Malagasy origins in the 17th century, Chin traces Reunionese labor struggles of the 1950s, while Fridom delves into the contemporary history of a free radio station and the riots of the 1990s. Three narratives, three eras, but one common thread: telling the islands' stories through universal myths of love, destiny, and freedom. This fusion does not seek to folklorize opera, but to expand its language by integrating regional sounds into a universal structure. Jean-Luc Trulès and Emmanuel Genvrin designed this genre to reflect the cultural diversity of the Indian Ocean while respecting European repertoire codes. With over a hundred artists, including a large choir bringing together Reunionese and Malagasy singers, this project marks a step toward recognition: for the first time, the Massy Opera House opens its stage to this lyrical genre.
