A 45-year-old man died from his injuries on Thursday, September 10, following a violent altercation that occurred at dawn in Baby Ambohimiadana, in the fokontany of Ambohikambana, rural commune of Behenjy, Ambatolampy district. The victim and two other men present at the scene, all butchers, had spotted two individuals carrying baskets filled with chickens. Around 4:30 a.m., while traveling by motorcycle to their pig slaughtering work, the three butchers noticed the two men. As it was still dark, they stopped to question them and verify the origin of the poultry. However, the situation escalated. One of the chicken carriers allegedly shone a flashlight in the eyes of one of the butchers before striking him with a hatchet to the head. His companion then fled. The two individuals allegedly pursued him by throwing stones. Taking advantage of the confusion, the suspects eventually fled westward, abandoning the chicken baskets at the scene. Alerted, four gendarmes assisted the fokonolona in the search. One individual was arrested and is suspected of being involved in this matter. Subsequent investigations established that the poultry came from a theft committed in Mandady, also in the rural commune of Behenjy. The chickens were returned to their owner. Seriously wounded in the head, the 45-year-old butcher was evacuated to a medical facility in Antananarivo. Despite medical care, he succumbed to his injuries the same day around 3 p.m. The search continues to find the other people involved. The territorial gendarmerie brigade of Behenjy is in charge of the investigation, which must determine the exact circumstances of the assault and the responsibilities of each party.
