Many people go out and have fun every weekend, leading to a sharp increase in car and motorcycle traffic on roads, particularly at night. However, this situation causes numerous traffic accidents due to drunk driving, excessive speed, and driver negligence. Five traffic accidents, for example, occurred in Antananarivo between September 7 and 11, according to National Gendarmerie officials. Some of these accidents even resulted in fatalities.
National roads are among the places where many accidents have been recorded. Car traffic increases during weekends due to the high number of people going out and entertaining themselves, which increases accident risk. "Some drivers don't respect traffic laws, so you always have to stay careful," says Aina Andriatsihala, a driver interviewed.
Beyond gas stations, which become entertainment venues, bars are also among the most frequented places, particularly in Antananarivo. Many motorists and motorcycle riders drive while intoxicated after consuming too much alcohol, which can cause accidents. "Sometimes, certain people continue drinking and then drive home," explains Léonie Razafimihaja, a bar owner.
The recklessness of motorcycle riders also contributes to the increase in road accidents. Some ride at excessive speeds or overtake in dangerous places. Others don't wear helmets, especially when they think law enforcement is not present on the roads. "Some motorcycle riders aren't afraid of hitting vehicles coming in the opposite direction. Sometimes, two of them ride at full speed as if chasing each other," continues Aina Andriatsihala.
