Merchants from Mahabibo were received by Mahajanga's special delegation. A demonstration outside City Hall became an opportunity and means of protest for traders in Mahajanga. On Wednesday, merchants stationed in front of the Mahabibo police station and municipal police office held a sit-in outside City Hall. They contested their eviction from the site over the past month. These vendors of various goods, including clothing, food products and other items, were removed from this area classified as an administrative zone. During their gathering, they called on the municipality to assign them a new location. "We have had nowhere to conduct our business for a month. We have no income while we owe money to our creditors. The municipality must relocate us elsewhere," the protesters said. Temporary solution A meeting between representatives of Mahajanga municipality and the traders finally led to a provisional solution. The merchants will be temporarily installed for one month on the communal square in front of Cité Maeva and the regional sports directorate headquarters. "The merchants must sign a commitment to occupy this new location for one month. The municipality has already identified where they will be relocated. The first planned location is the Ambovoalanana platform, then the solar panel site at Fiofio. If the solar park has not yet been cleared of solar equipment, traders will occupy Ambovoalanana," explained Guy Dolsain Arvely, president of the special delegation. The presence of these street vendors for several years in Mahabibo caused significant traffic disruptions and contributed to disorder in urban management. Massive traffic jams, pickpocketing and general insecurity prevailed in the area. The municipality, under new leadership, decided to restore order. Additionally, the municipality is conducting field operations to raise awareness about city sanitation projects. A municipal delegation led by the PDS and second vice-president Amina Soalihi observed the presence of street vendors and illegal constructions from the sacred wood to Tsaramandroso on Thursday. A warning was issued to violators. Eviction and demolition measures will be applied if the municipality's provisions are not respected.
