This is what teachers from the six school districts of the Atsimo Andrefana region stated at the pedagogical fair organized by the Regional Directorate of National Education (Dren) Atsimo Andrefana and Unicef in Toliara since yesterday. "I use this four-seasons model to explain summer, winter, autumn and spring to my eighth-grade students," explains Aurélia Razanakoto, teacher at EPP Belaza, Ampanihy, Ampanihy district. She created a rounded model divided into four sections featuring a cardboard house with many leaves on the roof to illustrate autumn, and cotton and a snowman to detail winter, for example. "I ask students what they see, I have them speak, and then I explain. Generally, I start with the content established in the school curriculum to create my learning materials," the teacher adds. They are semi-concrete handcrafted materials that students can touch and move around. They retain the lesson better because the images come back to them immediately when we address the lesson next time," she explains. The teacher demonstrated how she explains different landforms through a cardboard model. Many other materials are displayed in various stands, ranging from small homemade thermometer bottles, handmade compasses, cloth dolls to explain family concepts, to models of reproductive systems for fourth-grade students. "The pedagogical fair, organized for the first time in Atsimo Andrefana, showcases the creative talent of teachers in transmitting knowledge. It also helps identify what still needs to be done to improve the overall quality of education," emphasized Loria Biscottine, director of the regional center for pedagogical training (CRFP) located in Belemboka, Toliara II, during the official speeches. Only 8.8% of students can read and perform calculations in the Atsimo Andrefana region. Nationally, 18% of children aged 7 to 14 cannot read and 13% cannot perform calculations correctly. Today, a debate is organized to review the quality of education in the Atsimo Andrefana region. This will be followed by the announcement of the best teaching materials on display, demonstrations of public speaking in Malagasy, French and English for students, and a poetry competition for teachers.
