A tragic incident occurred yesterday afternoon in the heart of the capital. Around 2:30 p.m., a minibus operating route 186 from Analakely toward Anosy struck a group of pedestrians at the exit of the Ambohidahy tunnel. According to initial witness accounts, a critical brake system failure caused the devastating accident. Nine people were hit by the out-of-control vehicle. One victim suffered a fractured skull from the impact, others sustained multiple fractures, and one person had to be urgently extracted from beneath the vehicle, trapped near the wheels. Tragically, two victims—a man and a woman both in their thirties—died from their injuries during evacuation to the hospital. The Urban Municipality of Antananarivo (CUA) later confirmed that one of the deceased was a firefighter on duty. The seven other injured were rushed to HJRA hospital in Ampefiloha. At press time, six remain under strict medical supervision, while one has already returned home. Medical expenses will be fully covered by the State. In response to the severity of the situation, several government officials, the Antananarivo police prefect accompanied by the prefectural Mixed Design Body (OMC), and the Analamanga regional chief promptly visited the scene. A strict police operation was deployed to clear the road and relieve massive traffic congestion caused by the incident. The vehicle was immediately towed and impounded at Anosipatrana. The driver is in custody and under investigation by Antananarivo's Traffic Accident Brigade. An emergency meeting of authorities was held to shed light on this latest road tragedy.
