Madagascar is participating in the 37th session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI 37), held from September 7-11, 2026 in Rome, Italy. The Malagasy delegation is led by the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, Prof. Jean Maharavo. This international meeting addresses sustainable fishing, aquaculture, responsible management of aquatic resources, and the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Discussions also focus on the fishing sector's contribution to food security, job creation, and economic development. For the island nation, this participation represents an opportunity to defend its priorities and strengthen cooperation with the FAO, member states, and sector partners. Madagascar aims to promote artisanal fishing, develop sustainable aquaculture, and better leverage the blue economy. The goal is to make aquatic resources a genuine driver of sustainable development, benefiting local communities and future generations.
