Suspected of being the main person responsible for an attempted export of 280 tortoises, Jean Eddy Maminirina, alias Eddy Bois de Rose, is the subject of a search notice. Following the seizure of 280 radiated tortoises in Nosy Be on March 7, the regional directorate of the Diana Ministry of Environment issued a search notice on Monday against Jean Eddy Maminirina, known as Eddy Bois de Rose, aged 51. He is suspected of being the principal person responsible for the transport, detention and attempted export of these protected animals. His last known address is at Andriana Hôtel, in Madirokely, Nosy Be. The operation conducted by the Hell-Ville gendarmerie led to the discovery of the tortoises in a house in Dzamandzar. Three people are already imprisoned in Nosy Be: a woman who allegedly housed Eddy Bois de Rose, another who was allegedly tasked with guarding the tortoises, and the driver of a rental car used to transport the animals to Fascène international airport. According to the Nosy Be Environment and Forests Cantonment, the group planned to transport the tortoises to the airport but allegedly changed plans for unknown reasons. The animals were eventually returned to Dzamandzar, where they were seized. Their final destination was not specified. They have been placed under health surveillance. The suspect's judicial history contains several episodes. Between 2014 and 2015, the Independent Anti-Corruption Bureau opened investigations in the Sava and Analanjirofo regions into illegal rosewood exploitation. Two years later, the Special Task Force against this trafficking issued an arrest warrant against him. In February 2019, he was apprehended in a shopping center parking lot in Ankorondrano during a spectacular operation. The court sentenced him to five years in prison and a fine of two billion ariary, before this decision was overturned. In October 2021, he appeared again, this time for an attempted escape during hospitalization, and received two years in prison. Six months after the seizure of radiated tortoises in Nosy Be, his name resurfaces. He is now wanted for his alleged involvement in this new trafficking case.
