A major beach cleanup operation took place in Morondava this weekend. Menabe faces multiple environmental challenges as climate change impacts intensify in the region. "The population is suffering, water resources are depleting. Along routes RN35 and RN34, the situation is stark: rivers have completely dried up," declared Environment and Sustainable Development Minister Nolave Luck Aristide Andriatsihala during the opening of celebrations for World Environment Day, International Biodiversity Day, and World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, held June 28-29 in Morondava. Morondava is also experiencing severe silting of the Betania River. "The Betania River, which provides boat access to Morondava port, is suffering heavy silting caused by sand and alluvial accumulation from the Dabaraha River," the minister added. Degradation of the Menabe Antimena protected area is triggering serious environmental crises, with drought at the forefront. The region hosted these three celebrations to alert and mobilize the population to actively participate in environmental protection, biodiversity preservation, and combating drought and water depletion. Several flagship actions were undertaken to mark the event. A large carnival paraded through Morondava streets to raise awareness about nature and natural resource conservation. A major beach cleanup was organized to actively contribute to marine biodiversity protection.
