From 1956 to 2026, Antsiranana Province celebrates 70 years. From September 6 to 26, a celebration at the Alliance française revisits the major political figures of Madagascar's far north and its rich civilizational past. For Madagascar, the far north finds itself, willingly or not, in the stakes of the "Indo-Pacific." A new geopolitical terrain of 239 square kilometers, where the influence of the powerful grows increasingly pressing. This year, the "province" of Antsiranana celebrates 70 years (1956–2026). Young intellectuals from the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences, specializing in "history and geography" at Antsiranana University, are organizing, from today until September 26, a celebration at the local Alliance française. It goes without saying that France is leading the pack to secure a prime position in the famous Andovobazaha bays, considered the most strategic, and in others. Thus securing the military framework of their illegal seizure, in 2019, of the Scattered Islands, with its 12 billion barrels of oil and 500 billion cubic meters of gas. Not to mention the scandal of the Indian Army listening station revealed in 2007. In Antsiranana Province, Sambava and Antalaha constitute the world's premium vanilla stronghold. Beyond these two cities lies the history of great maritime exchanges between Malagasy, East Africa, the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia. The famous Rasijaky (14th to 16th century), with the city of Vohémar as its stronghold and historical setting. This city established undeniable complementarity with the Mahilaka site (9th to 14th century), as one was oriented toward Asia and the other toward Africa. Around Diego-Suarez are archaeological sites where oral tradition and accounts of first inhabitants intertwine. Groups, a mixture of Bantu and Austronesian peoples as throughout Madagascar, according to some researchers. Antsiranana Province is thus a place of Malagasy civilization. Cosmopolitan, urbanized, administered since the 9th century, open to the world and strongly commercial, with its maritime and river trading posts. In its program, this celebration, beginning today, will highlight historical figures of the far north: Philibert Tsiranana, Zafy Albert, Justin Bezara, Joseph Jaozandry, David Jaomanoro, Victor Miadana, and others. A series of conferences, testimonies, and perhaps concerts will animate this celebration.
