Two motorcycle police officers from the Ilanivato outpost came under fire in Tranodimy, near Anosibe, on Saturday evening around 7:15 p.m. They had been dispatched following an alert about two suspicious individuals armed with knives near a house. As the officers prepared to dismount their motorcycles, the criminals opened fire and fled. A pursuit ensued with an exchange of gunfire. One officer was struck in the abdomen and was rushed to HJRA hospital for emergency surgery to remove the bullet. Residents claim the bandits were planning to attack a cash point in Tranodimy. A witness recounted: "I saw two police 4x4s. One was carrying the wounded officer lying in the back. They drove him to the hospital at high speed, police whistling constantly to clear the way. We were terrified." Residents reported hearing at least five gunshots. Police have mobilized specialized units. That same evening, a 58-year-old cash point employee was attacked on his way home in Ampefiloha Ambodirano, shot in the back. Bandits took money and a phone totaling eighteen million ariary. He also required surgery. Police are investigating whether the two attacks are connected, as the areas are close to each other. Over the past month, a series of armed robberies has struck Anosibe, Ampefiloha Ambodirano, Tranodimy, and Andavamamba. On August 19, three armed men attacked a house in Anosibe Andrefana, killing a family man and fleeing with two million ariary and phones. The following day, August 20, a free trade zone worker was shot dead in Andavamamba while returning home. The repetition of these attacks underscores persistent insecurity in these neighboring districts.
