Chinese President Xi Jinping called on Tuesday for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to assume responsibility for the times and work together toward fairer and more equitable global governance. President Xi made these remarks in a speech delivered at the "SCO Plus" meeting held in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek. "Today's meeting focuses mainly on strengthening the role of the United Nations and building a multipolar world, demonstrating the SCO's commitment to reforming and improving global governance as our times demand," he said. "Currently, unprecedented changes unseen in a century are accelerating globally. We are witnessing a resurgence of hegemony, unilateralism and protectionism that runs counter to historical trends. However, the overwhelming majority of countries worldwide do not endorse power politics, conflict and confrontation, or isolation and regression," he added. Instead, they seek to secure their place on the international stage through national development and international cooperation, Xi assured. The Chinese president noted that in recent years, the rise of the Global South has brought profound changes to international power dynamics, and the trend toward a multipolar world is irreversible. "What kind of multipolarity does the world need? How will countries participate in and promote it? The international community must find consensus and make the right choice, one that will withstand the test of practice and history," he continued. Xi noted that as a major responsible country, China advocates for an equal and orderly multipolar world. According to him, sovereign equality and mutual respect are fundamental principles; balance, order and rule of law are inherent requirements; multilateralism, dialogue and consultation are essential paths; and mutual benefit, win-win cooperation and inclusivity form the way forward for development. "We must ensure equal rights, equal opportunities and equal rules for all countries, regardless of their size, strength or wealth," he affirmed. "As an important element of a multipolar world and an essential driving force of this world, Global South countries must enjoy greater representation and a stronger voice in international affairs." He urged all parties to promote common values of humanity, reject "double standards," exceptionalism, foreign interference, intimidation and the law of the jungle, and advance rule of law in international relations. "Major powers in particular must be leaders in respecting international norms and rule of law, and work together to address global challenges," Xi emphasized. According to him, all countries should participate in discussions on world affairs and should all set international standards. "The authority and vitality of the United Nations must be restored. Multilateral, global and regional mechanisms must strengthen their coordination and improve their effectiveness," he stated. "We must focus on the development agenda, uphold openness and cooperation, and bridge digital and artificial intelligence gaps, so that technological revolution and development achievements can benefit all nations," he added. Xi believes that after 25 years of existence, the SCO has succeeded in setting an example.
