Winter is gradually settling in across the country. A notable drop in temperatures is expected in several regions of Madagascar between June 27 and 29. Mornings are becoming colder, particularly on the Central Highlands, prompting the population to remain vigilant against this winter chill. The cool season is progressively establishing itself, as weather forecasts indicate a clear temperature decrease since the end of last week. Meteorological readings show a drop especially noticeable during the early morning hours and evenings. On the Central Highlands, minimum temperatures will continue to fall, sometimes dropping below 10°C, notably in Antsirabe where they approach 6°C and surrounding areas. Antananarivo is no exception, with increasingly cold mornings ranging between 11°C and 14°C, contrasting with relatively stable afternoons around 20 to 21°C.
Trade Winds
This cooling is largely explained by the persistent influence of trade winds, which bring cool air across the entire island. Although maximum temperatures remain generally stable, ranging between 25°C and 33°C in coastal areas like Mahajanga or Toliara, the temperature gap between day and night widens. This can sometimes exceed 10°C on the Highlands. In coastal zones, the drop is less pronounced, but morning coolness is also beginning to be felt, with minimum temperatures around 20°C in Toamasina or 21°C in Nosy Be. Facing this situation, authorities recommend taking precautions, particularly for vulnerable people such as children and the elderly. Morning cold can indeed promote certain respiratory diseases. This trend should continue over the coming days, confirming the effective entry into the Southern Hemisphere winter.
