MPOX: Thirteenth Death Recorded on June 25, 2026
A new death linked to mpox has been reported by the National Public Health Emergency Operations Center (COUSP), according to the latest epidemiological situation bulletin released by the Ministry of Public Health. This death, which occurred on June 25, 2026, brings the total number of mpox-related deaths in Madagascar to 13 since the epidemic began at the end of 2025. More than half of these deaths have occurred in the past six weeks, with the fifth and sixth deaths occurring on May 17 and 18, 2026, while the first officially recorded mpox death occurred on the night of February 28 to March 1, 2026 at the Soavinandriana military hospital in Antananarivo. Mpox continues to circulate among populations in various districts across the island. To date, 69 districts nationwide have been affected by the epidemic, with 36 districts currently active. Latest statistics report 48 new cases notified, of which 36 are confirmed, primarily located in the districts of Tolagnaro (7 cases), Antsohihy (6 cases), Vohémar (4 cases), Antananarivo Renivohitra (3 cases), and Sambava (3 cases). In total, the number of cases notified since the epidemic began stands at 3,763, of which 2,361 have been confirmed through testing.
