Bejofo-Betsiboka: Rogue Captain Arrested at Sea
A man claiming to be a captain was arrested at sea after attempting to illegally extract gold from a mining site. Following investigation and interrogation by authorities, the individual, identified as a captain in the Malagasy armed forces, allegedly ordered workers at a gold mining operation in Bejofo, Ampotaka district, western Antsiafabositra municipality, Maevatanàna district, in the Betsiboka region, to conduct unauthorized excavation. On Saturday, August 26, 2026, a comprehensive inspection was carried out at the mining site, with security measures implemented at the facility and alternative routes established for personnel movement. The mining operation also implemented a "source perception" system to enable the region and municipality to receive tax revenue. Authorities warned against negligence and abuse of power by gold mining operators following the inspection. Government officials were tasked with investigating illegal gold extraction and revenue collection. All parties are urged to report any unlawful activities. The incident has drawn concern from local gold mining workers regarding the actions and decisions of OMC Betsiboka members. Notably, the captain was arrested at sea on Saturday while allegedly transporting liters of fuel following his release from custody.
