A ground collapse occurred on Monday, August 24, in a gold mining quarry at Anosikely, fokontany of Anosibe, rural commune of Ankadinondry Sakay, Tsiroanomandidy district, killing one person and seriously injuring another. The accident happened around 3 p.m. when a man descended into a tunnel to conduct a survey. According to witness accounts, other gold panners heard a loud collapse sound before rushing to the scene. The 47-year-old victim became trapped at the tunnel entrance, buried under debris. Another man, aged 14, who was near the pit's edge, was also struck and seriously injured. He was evacuated to Tsiroanomandidy hospital for treatment. Alerted around 4 p.m., territorial gendarmes from Ankadinondry arrived to conduct initial investigations. Five gendarmes, led by unit commanders and the Anosy outpost, along with the chief doctor from CSB II Diavolana, carried out necessary checks. Upon arrival, the victim's body had already been transported by family to their home in Iharamasoandro, fokontany of Anosibe. The body examination was conducted on-site in the doctor's presence. According to initial findings, the tunnel was no longer in operation and contained no backfill material, according to those present. The exact circumstances of the collapse must be determined through investigation.
