Chinese nationals have been arrested and several pieces of equipment used in mining activities have been seized during a raid in Mananjary district, following reports of illegal mining operations last week. Alerted by this information, Keeper of the Seals and Minister of Justice Fanirisoa Ernaivo traveled to the site to assess the situation firsthand. She was accompanied by police officers responsible for monitoring mining activities and the director in charge of Mineral Resources. On site, authorities found evidence of attempted illegal mining, as well as work to fill in watercourses. These practices are likely to damage the environment and compromise agricultural activities and the livelihoods of local populations. The Chinese nationals present on the site and suspected of involvement in these activities were immediately arrested. The equipment used in these operations was seized by the competent authorities. Following this intervention, the Minister of Justice called on local authorities to fully assume their responsibilities and demonstrate firmness in enforcing existing legislation. She also stressed the need to ensure that the exploitation of mineral resources benefits local communities and contributes to regional development, rather than serving the interests of a restricted group alone. The matter will now be subject to legal procedures to determine the responsibilities of those involved and any applicable sanctions.
